Yuriko Hill

My introduction to art initially took place while I was living in Tokyo.  At art school I made a special study of 15th century Flemish painting and it wasn’t until I settled in England that my interest in pottery developed.  I don’t know how that original training has influenced me as a potter, but I feel that my sense of colour and shape reflect something of that early work.

In England I studied ceramics at Camden Adult Institute and then at Brunel University Arts Centre.  I won the prize for the best ceramics of the year at Brunel during my final year.  Upon finishing the course, I set up my own ceramic studio in January 1997.

I use mainly stoneware and sometimes porcelain often decorated with slips, and frequently with a dolomite based glaze.  In surface decoration, my aim is to enhance the shape of the pots.

Principally Japanese pottery is functional and often ceremonial as in the Tea Ceremony.  The function of my pots depends on the imagination of the owner, and this relationship determines the life of the pot.
